Highlights

Day 1: Kigali city tour.

On the first day of the safari, guests will be picked up from either Kigali International Airport or their hotel in Kigali by a safari driver from Primate Tours. The day begins with a city tour, including a visit to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site to learn about the tragic events of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Additionally, guests will explore the Kimironko local market and “palace” before enjoying dinner and spending the night in the city.

Day 2: Transfer to Goma Congo and Mount Nyirangongo hike.

On the second day of the safari, you’ll enjoy breakfast at your hotel in Kigali before meeting your safari driver. Together, you’ll journey to Cyangugu border, crossing into Goma and then proceeding to Kibatsi village, the starting point for hiking Mount Nyirangongo. Following lunch, a hiking briefing will be provided, and porters can be hired as needed. The ascent of Mount Nyirangongo typically takes four to six hours, depending on the hikers’ physical abilities. Upon reaching the summit, dinner will be served, and accommodations for the night will be provided in cabins.

Day 3: Descend and transfer to volcanoes national park.

On the third day of the safari, breakfast is served at the cabin before descending from Nyirangongo volcano’s foothills. Afterwards, a drive back to Kigali is scheduled, with an estimated arrival time of around 3 pm. Following a late lunch, a two to three-hour drive takes you to Volcanoes National Park, renowned for its mountain gorilla population and home to ten habituated gorilla families. Upon arrival, check-in at your lodge is followed by dinner, allowing for relaxation and overnight stay.

Day 4: mountain gorilla trekking experience.

On the 4th day of the safari, an early morning start awaits with a hearty breakfast followed by a drive to the park’s headquarters for a briefing on rules and regulations. Among 12 mountain gorilla groups, you’ll be assigned one for trekking. Trek durations vary from 30 minutes to 5 hours, so equipped with a packed lunch, you’ll set off into the forests at 7:00 am. This strenuous but remarkable journey offers stunning views. Spending one hour with the mountain gorillas, you’ll observe their behavior, capture memorable moments through photography, and learn about their habits. After the hour, you’ll return to the park headquarters, where you can either relax at the lodge or opt for a village visit. The day concludes with dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Iby’wacu cultural village tour and transfer back to Kigali.

On the fifth and final day of the safari, you’ll enjoy breakfast, check out from your lodge, and embark on a tour of the Iby’wacu cultural village in Musaze. Following the cultural village visit, you’ll head to Kigali, where you’ll have lunch before being dropped off at either your hotel or the airport for your departure flight home.
