Rwanda and Congo

The 7 Days Rwanda and Congo safari offers an exceptional opportunity to explore two safari destinations, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Highlights include visits to Lake Kivu, Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, Nyungwe National Park for chimpanzee trekking, and Nyiragongo Volcano for hiking. Volcanoes National Park boasts 12 gorilla families available for trekking experiences. Additional attractions include Tanzania’s Lake Kivu, canopy walks in Nyungwe National Park, and strenuous hiking at Nyiragongo Volcano. The safari begins and ends in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali.

Highlights

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

On the first day of the 7-day Rwanda and Congo safari, guests are transferred to Volcanoes National Park. Upon arrival at Kigali International Port, a safari guide from Primate Holidays will greet and accompany them on the scenic drive to the park. The journey offers stunning views of rolling hills. Upon arrival at the park, guests check into their lodge, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.

 

Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking.

On the second day of the 7-day Rwanda and Congo safari, participants will embark on a mountain gorilla trekking expedition. After breakfast, they will receive a briefing at the park’s headquarters, outlining guidelines and allocated gorilla families for trekking. With packed lunches, they will venture into the forests in search of mountain gorillas, a process lasting from thirty minutes to six hours. Upon encountering the gorillas, participants will spend an hour observing their behavior and capturing photos. Upon returning to the headquarters, they will receive gorilla trekking certificates. In the afternoon, an optional visit to the Iby’wacu cultural community allows for interactions with locals and cultural performances. The night will be spent at the lodge with dinner provided.

 

Day 3: transfer to Nyungwe National Park.

On the third day of the 7-day Rwanda and Congo safari, you’ll start the day with an early breakfast before checking out from your lodge. After meeting your safari driver, you’ll embark on a journey to Nyungwe National Park. En route, you’ll stop for lunch at the Nyanza King’s Palace and visit the Murambi Genocide Memorial Site. Upon arrival at the park, you’ll have dinner and spend the night there.

 

Day 4: chimpanzees tracking and canopy walk.

On the 4th day of your 7-day Rwanda and Congo safari, you’ll begin with a canopy walk and primate tracking in Nyungwe National Park. After breakfast, a ranger briefing will inform you of park regulations before venturing into the forest in search of chimpanzees. Along the trek, you’ll encounter various primates and bird species. Upon spotting the chimpanzees, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and photograph them in their natural habitat. After spending an hour with the chimpanzees, you’ll return to the park headquarters for lunch before embarking on a canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest. The canopy walk offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including birds, monkeys, and lush trees. Finally, you’ll return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

 

Day 5: transfer to Lake Kivu.

On the 5th day of the 7-day Congo and Rwanda safari, after breakfast, you’ll check out from your lodge and meet your safari driver for a journey to Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake. Depending on your schedule, you can enjoy various water sports and activities such as swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, and coffee excursions upon arrival at Lake Kivu. In the evening, dinner will be served, and you’ll spend the night at your lodge by the lake.

 

Day 6: Nyiragongo hiking.

On the 6th day of the 7-day Rwanda and Congo safari, participants will embark on a hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo. After an early morning breakfast, the journey begins with a drive to Kibati Ranger Post, the starting point of the hike. A ranger will provide an overview of the safari before the five to six-hour trek commences. Upon reaching the summit, adventurers will be treated to breathtaking views of the boiling red lava in the crater lava lake. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided at the volcanoes campsite, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

 

Day 7: descending to the bottom.

On the final day of the 7 Days Congo & Rwanda Safari, you will descend to the base of Mount Nyiragongo after an early breakfast at the crater rim. Following the descent hike and meeting your safari driver at the Kibati ranger post, you will journey back to Rwanda, with a border crossing at Goma. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will enjoy lunch before being dropped off at either your hotel or the airport for your departure flight.
