Highlights

Day 1: Arrive in Kigali.

The first day of the 7-day Rwanda gorilla safari begins with a warm welcome at the airport by a representative from the Rwanda travel agency. You’ll then be transferred to your hotel for check-in, where you can unwind, enjoy dinner, and spend the night, preparing for the adventures ahead.

 

Day 2: Transfer to Akagera national park and Ihema Boat Cruise

The second day of the 7-day Rwanda gorilla safari begins after breakfast with a transfer to Akagera National Park. Upon arrival, guests check into their accommodation before enjoying a lunch featuring local cuisine. Following lunch, a guided boat ride around Lake Ihema provides opportunities to observe various aquatic creatures such as crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and numerous bird species inhabiting the wetlands and lakeside areas.

 

Day 3: Early morning game drive and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

The second day of the safari involves:

  • Transfer to Akagera National Park
  • Check-in to accommodation
  • Lunch with local cuisine
  • Boat ride on Lake Ihema for wildlife viewing (hippos, crocodiles, birds)

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking.

The fourth day of the 7-day Rwanda gorilla safari begins with an early morning breakfast, followed by a briefing at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters about gorilla trekking protocols. Visitors are assigned to a randomly selected gorilla group to follow, and then venture into the Virunga forests for the trekking experience, which can last between 30 minutes to 6 hours. After the trek, guests return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. If time permits, there’s an opportunity to engage in cultural exchange with the local Banyarwanda community. The day concludes with dinner, relaxation, and overnight stay at the hotel or lodge.

 

Day 5: Golden Monkey Trekking.

On day 5 of your Rwanda gorilla safari, you’ll choose an activity in the morning: gorilla trekking or visiting the Dian Fossey Karisoke Research Center. In the afternoon, you’ll travel to Nyungwe National Park, stopping for a local Rwandan lunch and checking into your lodge for the evening.

 

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking.

On the sixth day of the 6-day Rwanda gorilla safari, participants start early with breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking led by a Primate Holidays guide. They then venture into Nyungwe Forest to track down the gregarious and energetic primates, with chimpanzees being the easiest to spot as they move through the trees, displaying playful behavior. The trek can last from thirty minutes to three hours. Following the trek, the group returns to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, they embark on a stroll to the Canopy Walk, a 50-meter swing bridge suspended between massive trees, offering an aerial view of the rainforest and a chance to observe wildlife below. The day concludes with a return to the hotel or lodge in time for dinner before dusk sets in.

 

Day 7: Return to Kigali.

On the seventh day of 7 days Rwanda gorilla safari. Get up early in the morning and take breakfast. After breakfast, you will gather your belongings and set out to return to Kigali. You’ll take a Kigali city tour as soon as you arrive. You can also go to Kigali’s Genocide Memorial Site with lunch enroute. Your seven day journey of Rwanda comes to a close. After that, your Primate Holidays will drive you back to the airport or hotel.
